Drew Brees is sitting while his National Football Conference Top Seed New Orleans Saints play the meaningless final game of their regular season.
Want your money on the Saints?
The Indianapolis Colts gave up their opportunity for a perfect season when they surrendered a halftime lead and lost at home to the New York Jets. On Sunday, the Colts have nothing to play for when they visit the Buffalo Bills.
Want your money on the Colts?
Those are the obvious ones, teams that have not only nothing to play for, but just as importantly, reasons to rest players for the meaningful games that are upcoming for the Saints and Colts when they open their postseasons at home in two weeks. But, there are other teams that are no more interested in playing this week than the Colts and Saints, and they are not pinned with point spreads that make them tough plays. For the record, the Bills are nearly double-digit home favorites over the Colts at Ralph Wilson Stadium and another team out of the playoffs, the Panthers, are favored by a touchdown over the visiting Saints.
Then there are the Tennessee Titans, who opened this year with six straight losses and then rekindled unlikely playoff hopes with a series of wins that kept them in the running for a postseason berth until their Christmas night home loss to the San Diego Chargers. Might the Titans be done before they kickoff on Sunday at Seattle?
Well, they do have one thing that remains a challenge; getting runningback Chris Johnson a 2000 yards rushing season and perhaps, with a huge day against the Seahawks defense, an all-time single season rushing mark. Johnson comes into action this week with 1872 yards gained on the ground, 128 short of the exclusive 2000 yards in a season club that was first accomplished by OJ Simpson and since has added three other players to the 2000 yards rushing in a season club; Barry Sanders, Jamal Lewis and the all-time single season champion, Eric Dickerson who rushed for 2105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984.
Ok, does that put the Titans in a position to beat the point spread this week during their visit to the Northwest?
Not a chance.
Consider the Seahawks side of this proposition.
They have been hammered in recent weeks by scores of 34-7, 24-7 and 48-10 by the Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers respectively. Now they are the targets of their home fans, the media in Seattle and the record conscious Titans.
Do you see what is going to happen here?
Tennessee comes to town with records on their mind, Seattle counters with motivation spiked by the fear of getting blown out on their home field.
What a mismatch.
While most people focus on the talent mismatches, games that involve great teams against the also-rans, my attention is always grabbed by the motivational mismatches. There are a lot more opportunities there because while talent is most often compensated for by the point spread, motivation is a silent killer and comes with advantages on the spread.
Good luck Tennessee in your pursuit of a record this week on your visit to Seattle … and be sure to collect you belongings and consolation gifts on your way home.
